Black Mold Pictures

Black mold is a type of highly toxic mold that can cause severe medical issues in certain people.  In most cases, mold tends to cause respiratory infections due to its build-up in the air.  Black mold, or more specifically the dangerous toxic mold, can develop when mold spores bond to a wet surface and start to grow.  Once they begin growing, they will slowly eat away at the material they are growing on, making it much more difficult to clean off and eliminate from the home.  Black mold pictures are used to help properly identify this potential health threat in your home or business.  Here are ten black mold pictures and some common information of this dangerous strain of stachybotrys.

In most forms, this black mold takes the form of a slimy black or green substance, which can usually flake off of the surface of its host material very easily.  Because of this, a building that has a high level of black mold contamination will normally have a large amount of spores floating around in the air.  These black mold spore can easily cause severe lung infections and the development of serious medical issues.

Black mold pictures showing mold having eating through wall cavities.

When black mold starts to develop inside the walls, it will start to slowly show through the wall cavities between the joists, eventually eating its way through the drywall.  In most cases, this will start of with a slight discoloration, generally getting darker as time progresses.  The mold can usually be detected through a series of air quality tests used to find hidden mold before it gets to this stage, but once here, the drywall will have to be removed and replaced at a minimum.

Black mold at this stage is considered to be a severe health hazard, and the home must remain vacant until the repairs and removal are complete.

Black mold growing in a bathroom wall.

Mold always needs moisture to grow, and what better place to find that than in the bathroom.  Black mold in the bathroom is a very common sight.  High moisture areas of the home are the most likely places for mold to develop.  When moisture develops on objects, mold spores will start to stick to that surface more, where it will then start to eat away at that substance, growing and expanding.  Bathrooms that have been made from improper material can develop black mold more easily, as shown in this black mold picture.  It is common for bathrooms made from plain dry wall to develop black mold at the tops of walls and near the base of the wall.  This is where the majority of moisture accumulates and seeps into the wall material.

All bathroom walls should be made from a material like wet boards, which are a drywall like material that is designed for a high humidity environment.

Black mold most likely caused by flood damage.

Like stated before, black mold needs water to form, and an excessive amount of water.  In this black mold picture, you can see the potential result from severe flood damage.  The drywall in this room was most likely exposed to a high level of water for an extended period of time.  Once the water drained away, the remaining moisture stayed in the wall material, creating the perfect environment for black mold.  This, along with common flood water toxins and debris make many home businesses, and other structures uninhabitable for people.    In most of these cases, the entire wall structures will need to be replaced to eliminate any potential health hazards from the structure.

All black mold needs to grow at levels like this are moisture and a host organism to feed off of.  There are currently types of black mold that can feed off of paper, wood, carpet, on stone, and even in food.

Since black mold can develop on almost every surface, the key to preventing black mold is to help keep the levels of moisture down in your home or business, especially in areas with a high natural humidity.  As this black mold pictures shows, mold can develop on wood just as easily as it does on drywall and other common building substances.  Once the moisture as had an opportunity to accumulate on the substance, the mold can take hold and start feeding on the underlying substance, creating a potentially hazardous situation like this.  This type of black mold is a strain of stachybotrys, a genus in the mold family.  By nature, mold is an asexually reproducing organism.  It is considered to be a common type of fungi.  Mold at any level inside the home must be cleaned and removed, since it can quickly spread and grow to numerous other area of the building.  In most situations, black mold will develop in the following places in the home.

  • Basements and Crawlspaces
  • Garages
  • Bathrooms
  • Kitchens
  • Inside Walls
  • Around Windows
  • In Laundry Rooms
  • Inside Ventilation Shafts

Each of these areas is a prime area for mold development since it normally has a high moisture content, a low light level, and are typically left undisturbed, allowing for a longer period of time for the mold to grow and develop.

Black mold growing on the underside of a folding cafeteria table.

Black mold is not restricted to growing inside of a building.  It can also grow on a number of objects, so long as they have been exposed to the proper conditions for mold growth, moisture, darkness, and something to grow on.  This black mold picture shows a large area of black mold growing on a folding cafeteria table.  Most likely, this particular table was either placed into storage wet or placed into storage where is got get, then was left alone for an extended period of time. This gave black mold spores the opportunity to attached to the table and slowly grow.  This table will most likely be useless and need to be discarded since the mold spores have taken over a large portion of the area.  Toxic mold found on objects is just as dangerous as black mold found on building material.

When left untreated, black mold can quickly spread, engulfing entire walls and sections of buildings, as you can see in this black mold picture.  In many cases, black mold require decisive action once it has been discovered, otherwise an entire home can become engulfed, resulting in costly repair and cleaning bills.  There are several different signs of black mold that every homeowner should always be on the lookout for, including;

  • Yellow to black stains on the walls.
  • Mold emits an unusual odor.  Smelling this means you need to have your home checked.  It is typically a musty, damp smells, that may have a foul stench along with it.  Many have compared it to a urine smell.
  • Moisture-  All areas of water damage in the home should be watched.  If anything starts to develop, it needs to be tested and cleaned immediately.
  • Always clean and check the bathroom, since this is one of the highest moisture areas in the average home.
  • When in doubt, call in a professional.  They are trained in the use of certain tools to measure the mold spore counts in the air, which can be a sure sign of a mold problem.

Black mold found inside of a wall.

Black mold is commonly found inside of walls, which makes it difficult for the average person to detect.  Even though it can be difficult to detect, there will always be signs present for serious cases of black mold.  It is important that these are paid attention to in order to eliminate an black mold before it can cause serious health issues.  High levels can cause a high rate of upper respiratory infections, chronic sinus infections, and even toxic poisoning, which can lead to serious health problems, including death.  The toxic poisoning is the result of volatile organic compounds being released into the air during he feeding process of the mold, or more precisely, when the mold is eating away at the substance it is attached to.

Black mold showing up on multiple walls outside of a kitchen.

While we have discussed how common black mold develops in the bathroom, the kitchen is yet another area of the home that should be observed at all times to help prevent a black mold problem from developing.  The kitchen is home to a slew of potential plumbing issues that could arise.  The modern kitchen has water lines running to a washing machine, the sink, the refrigerator, and many other appliances, creating a high risk area for condensation and pipes leaking.  Both of these can cause a build-up of moisture inside of the walls of the kitchen, creating the potential for black mold development.  To ensure that this does not happen, make sure all kitchen plumbing is installed properly (to help prevent condensation from developing on pipes inside of the wall) and make sure all leaks are fixed.  Water should not be allowed to stand in sinks or on counter tops for any longer than is absolutely necessary.

A severe case of black mold where you can see the spores and clusters developing.

When black mold becomes severe, immediate action will need to be taken to help ensure that health concerns do not become an issue.  This black mold picture shows a severe case of black mold.  The the mold growth starts to form larger clusters like these, there is an increased rate of the mold entering the air.  The more mold that is present in the air, the more mold those in that environment are breathing in, increasing the potential for lung issues to develop.

He sprayed with clorox on the othe area. He cleaned with NO mask or gloves. I am worried for my family's health. I'm sure the spores were fling all over the house. We couldn't call our insurance company for fear they wood canceled us and if we ever sold the house we would have to tell new owners. How would I wash close that have been exposed to spores?

You don't need to throw out clothes and belongings if you can wash them. Laundry detergent kills mold spores. You can wash mold off walls with household detergent and then treat with a spray that is meant for killing mold and preventing it from coming back. Make sure you wear plastic gloves and a dust mask. Just close the area off with heavy plastic taped to the ceilings and walls and have an air mover (you can rent them) sucking all the spores out the closest window. If it's really bad and gone into your walls/studs you may be able to clean and treat with mold cleaner but if it's too bad then you may have to replace studs etc.

It's a pain in the butt however you should be able to deal with the mold yourself. For severe cases you can hire a mold removal company to come in and take care of the problem. Could run you a couple thousand though.

I took a job as a park custodian and the house comes with the job. Our park gets flooded all of the time. I run the de-humidifier but have noticed black mold on the windows, under the vinyl flooring in the bathroom, and today I noticed it around the furnace registers. My husband has serious COPD and heart problems. What can we do about this? Do we need to get out of this house?

Name: Amanda Date: Sunday, Jun 27 2010

Me and my family just moved into a duplex in May. 2 years ago we had really bad flooding and the place we're in now has a lot of black mold in the basement probably caused by the flooding. There are parts of the concrete wall where you can tell it was bleached but there is drywall down there as well that they must have ignored. We tried to talk to them to get them to do something and now they are trying to get us to leave to avoid the cost of repairs. We called the health inspector and he is going to come over and take a look at everything. I was wondering if we have to vacate until the problem is taken care of, if they have to pay for part of the rent for another place while this one's being cleaned. We have two 8 year olds and I'm currently 4 1/2 months along with a high risk pregnancy and when I say high risk I mean seeing two different doctors every month, seeing a genetics counselor every month, and having ultrasounds every month. If someone knows anything about this please email me at memarhea@hotmail.com.

If you're looking for a way to control mold whithout using harsh chemicals you might want to try tea tree oil gel. It's a natural product and it works against all mold. You can find it at www.teatreeoilgel.com. I've used it and it's great.

Obama will save you! Most of you probably voted for the lying man-child. Try going into a hospital and asking for the free health-care, if you haven't already. You, with the B/F, make the jerk marry you, as long as you let him live with you, he gets to do everything without accountability or consequence.

2yrs ago we bought our first home. 6months ago my three year old daughter started coughing constantly, runy nose, excessive mucus in her chest. My husband took her to the dr. two weeks ago and she was on antibiotics for ten days. On the tenth day her symptoms came back as worse as before. I saw that we had black mold on our windows and I could not get it out of my head that maybe she was not suffering from allergies, but the mold.
